If you are aged 16-18 and not in education, college or training and are looking for a course that is flexible and fun, this is for you! Transport is provided, so the 'how do I get there' question is no longer a problem! Courses need a minimum of six young people, for more information on current courses available in your area contact Julie Rickwood - 07890 270564
Courses which are accredited by APT Awards are interactive, fun and enable you to work at your own pace with appropriate support. We are also delivering a Peer Education training course ‘Barclays Money Skills’ which builds on young people’s financial knowledge, skills and understanding and provides opportunities for you to share this knowledge with others. These courses are delivered by youth work staff.
What previous students achieved.
The Rural Employment and Learning Team concluded their recent Prepare for Employment course with a community garden project. This focused on Riverbed YMCA; supported living for some of the young people on the course. The group chose this as “the YMCA garden was in much need of being tidied up and to make it feel like a welcoming environment” They did a fantastic job and we are proud of their achievement.
Linking with Knightstone Housing and Aster Communities, a group of young people from Street/Glastonbury have recently finished a course with SRYP. The group took part in activities such as orienteering, slacklining, indoor rock climbing, green activities, carpentry skills, moped safe start day, mock interview, completing application forms, team work and a community project improving their local area. All achieved a Level 1 qualification – Preparing For Employment.
Of the group, two young people secured full time work, one feels more confident about job hunting and two have continued to be involved in volunteering in their local community. One young person states: “Thank you for this course, It’s been great, thanks for all you have done.”
Real believes that sport and practical activities support young people’s pathway to employability. Real works with young people’s interests and aims to provide new and exciting opportunities.
The course also offers a one day Safe Start course; this involves a half day in our moped workshop and a half day practical riding. Young people said, “A good new experience.” “Very enjoyable; definitely worth doing if you get the opportunity.” There is also an opportunity to take part in a 30 hour work experience placement in our ‘ped shed’
Supporting Young People
REAL recognises that young people living in rural and isolated areas may not have great access to information, advice and services that young people in urban areas may have. We are keen to support you and are able to provide our Preparing For Employment course for groups of five young people or more anywhere in Somerset. We utilise a delivery vehicle which is fully equipped with light, heat, seats, netbooks, wifi and refreshments. We can collect you from your home/nearby location and provide transport for other elements of the course such as green activity days, sport activities and safe start mechanic course.
REAL works with a range of local agencies and welcomes referral to our courses.
