R.E.A.L. Rural Employment and Learning

Times are tough for job seekers. Make sure you have all the skills.
The REAL Project is currently delivering accredited courses in various areas of Somerset. Next session, see here!
The first course you can take part in is a National Open College Network qualification in Employability Skills. This covers:
- CV Building
- Completing application forms
- Environmental Skills
- Safe Start mechanic day course
- Interview skills
- Customer Service
- Health & Safety.
Courses which are accredited by Weston College are interactive, fun and enable you to work at your own pace with appropriate support. If you are interested in Environmental Skills or Mechanics, there are options of progressing onto NOCN Level 1 courses in these areas. We are also delivering a Peer Education training course ‘Barclays Money Skills’ which builds on young people’s financial knowledge, skills and understanding and provides opportunities for you to share this knowledge with others. These courses are delivered by youth work staff.
More about Barclays Money Skills
LATEST
Young people from Street, Glastonbury and Wells have completed the NOCN Employability Course and Barclays Money Skills Peer education training.

The group devised a job role and responsibilities and interviewed two staff members for a job, they then scored the applicants and provided feedback. One young person described the benefits of working with the REAL team as “I gained more insight into opportunities and what’s out there rather than thinking you know everything.”
The NOCN course also offers a one day Safe Start course; this involves a half day in our moped workshop and a half day practical riding. Young people said, “A good new experience.” “Very enjoyable; definitely worth doing if you get the opportunity.”
The next NOCN Employability group will be commencing on Monday 13th May (Burnham on Sea YMCA) over 7 days 9.30-3pm. Places are limited, for more information and to book a place contact Julie Rickwood on 07890 270564 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Work with the YMCA

The REAL project has run two NOCN employability courses with young people in Highbridge and Bridgwater. Young people created CV’s, completed practice application forms, developed interview skills, teamwork, confidence building and goal setting. One young person stated “I have been able to work on my CV and interviewing skills as I didn’t have much of an idea of what skills I needed for interviews.”
Supporting Young People
REAL recognises that young people living in rural and isolated areas may not have great access to information, advice and services that young people in urban areas may have. The REAL team can support with CV building, application forms, job search and interview skills, as well as supporting young people in other areas of their lives. We can refer to projects within SRYP such as the Moped Loan Scheme, to increase young people’s mobility.
One young person whom REAL met had recently moved into the Somerset area, had no transport, limited services and was unemployed. With support she is now enrolled on a full time college course with a part-time job and has passed her motorbike licence whilst loaning a SRYP moped.
Another young person, also unemployed has been supported to create a new CV, has developed her interview skills and has now begun a Hairdressing Course at college and has secured a work placement in a salon. She states, ‘The REAL support has made me feel more confident about looking for work and you have helped me get back into college, I’m really excited about going back to college’.
