New course for Aster Housing residents in Street/Glastonbury starts soon. See more here.
Courses which are accredited by APT Awards are interactive, fun and enable you to work at your own pace with appropriate support. We are also delivering a Peer Education training course ‘Barclays Money Skills’ which builds on young people’s financial knowledge, skills and understanding and provides opportunities for you to share this knowledge with others. These courses are delivered by youth work staff.
What previous students achieved.
Linking with JCP and Careers South West, a group of young people from the Mendip area have recently finished a course with SRYP. The group took part in activities such as circuit training, spinning, slacklining, orienteering, green activities, carpentry skills, moped safe start day, mock interview, completing application forms, team work and work experience placements. All achieved a Level 1 qualification – Preparing For Employment.
Of the group, one young person has now been offered an apprenticeship, one young person is volunteering in SRYP’s Ped Shed and one young person has secured employment. Feedback from the group has been positive, one young person states: ‘I think the general atmosphere of the SRYP environment is one of the main reasons why I have enjoyed the course. It has more of a social feeling, but discreetly puts some learning in.
Previously on this project, young people completed the Employability Course and Barclays Money Skills Peer education training.
The group devised a job role and responsibilities and interviewed two staff members for a job, they then scored the applicants and provided feedback. One young person described the benefits of working with the REAL team as “I gained more insight into opportunities and what’s out there rather than thinking you know everything.”
The course also offers a one day Safe Start course; this involves a half day in our moped workshop and a half day practical riding. Young people said, “A good new experience.” “Very enjoyable; definitely worth doing if you get the opportunity.” There is also an opportunity to take part in a 30 hour work experience placement in our ‘ped shed’
Work with the YMCA & JCP (Job Centre Plus)
The REAL project has run three employability courses with young people in Highbridge, Bridgwater and Burnham on Sea. Young people created CV’s, completed practice application forms, developed interview skills, teamwork, confidence building and goal setting. One young person stated “I have been able to work on my CV and interviewing skills as I didn’t have much of an idea of what skills I needed for interviews.”
Supporting Young People
REAL recognises that young people living in rural and isolated areas may not have great access to information, advice and services that young people in urban areas may have. We are keen to support you and are able to provide our Preparing For Employment course for groups of five young people or more anywhere in Somerset. We utilise a delivery vehicle which is fully equipped with light, heat, seats, netbooks, wifi and refreshments. We can collect you from your home/nearby location and provide transport for other elements of the course such as green activity days, sport activities and safe start mechanic course.
We will work with you to secure a work experience placement in your local area. During our last course we loaned a young man a push bike so he could access his mechanic placement 2 miles from home. We can also you refer to projects within SRYP such as the Moped Loan Scheme, to help your mobility.
