Somerset Rural Youth Project is part of NCS South West, a consortium leading on the National Citizen Service (NCS) pilot.

The success of last year’s National Citizen Service challenge means Somerset Rural Youth Project and the Volunteer Network can once again offer some fantastic experiences to youngsters. Taking part means going away for a week of fun and challenging activities -  which might involve kayaking, coasteering, hiking, surfing, caving, climbing, sailing, and other outdoor challenges. There is also another week away where participants get the chance to find out about what makes their communities tick – meeting charities, businesses, MPs and Councillors. It’s also good news for parents who can have a couple of weeks rest during the summer.

NEW FOR 2012

This year’s programme will be made up of eight teams offering a range of activities.

PINK TEAM Uses positive social action to bring people together. Train to put on a series of ‘Be Kind’ days in villages by using positive social action to bring people together and improve their sense of well-being.

GOING PLACES Get involved with an undercover investigation into Somerset travel, then shout about it! Raise money to adopt a moped, growing the moped loan fleet.

GREEN TEAM 1 & 2 Get hands on where you live, helping wildlife and natural landscapes. Have fun with outdoor challenges, learning practical accredited skills.

FAMOUS FRIENDS Have fun using film / photography / graphic design to promote great stuff happening locally. Give a media make-over to deserving groups.

PERFORMING ART AND MUSIC Come and plan, set-up and run a tour of performances. Take music, art and drama to rural areas in Somerset.

SHAPE UP Be part of a group who discover the fun and benefits of sport and exercise. Then pass it on, inspiring others to be more active.

FAITH IN ACTION Explore what it means to put your faith into action and host a Somerset Village at the Greenbelt Festival in August.

NCS is a flagship initiative supporting the Government’s vision for building the Big Society. NCS will act as a gateway to the Big Society for many young people, by supporting them to develop the skills and attitudes they need to get more engaged with their communities and become active and responsible citizens.
